Personal Profile

Traits, Quirks

Collins wears a phaser when on duty at all times.

Joseph enjoys an active lifestyle including kayaking, surfing, soccer, cycling, hiking and running. He is also skilled in several Earth martial arts and the Klingon Mok’bara and has often taught classes to the enlisted security personnel he served with.

Collins hopes to retire in one piece, unlike so many of his friends over the years.

Joe enjoys spending time with his friends, trying new food and drink, reading and relaxing off duty.

Joseph doesn’t touch alcohol because of the death of a friend in an alcohol related accident during his teenage years. Collins isn’t a big fan of those officers who could be described as ‘by the book’, He believes that the rule book is a guide but that there is a certain amount of leeway, at least in some of the regulations. Despite his easy-going nature he takes his job, and the safety of those he is sworn to protect very seriously.

Collins is an expert in hand-to-hand combat and knows security procedures inside out.

Joe Collins has a fiery temper when provoked and has broken more than a few noses, bones, PADDs, tricorders and other devices over the course of his career.

Collins is well trained in several martial arts and is thus considered an expert in self-defence. He has also become proficient in the use of the bladed weapons of several non-Federation cultures. As a Starfleet Security Officer he is also an expert in any weapon currently in use by Starfleet.

Personal History

Childhood and adolescence

Joseph Collins was born on October 7, 2349 to a pair of Starfleet Officers, George and Judith Collins. When he was born both parents were assigned to Starfleet Command on Earth. At the age of three his mother was reassigned to the U.S.S. Wyoming as her Executive Officer. Joe remained on Earth with his father during his mother’s deployment. George Collins may have been a strict Marine but he was a loving father. He always had time for his son and spent as much time as he could with Joe.

Lieutenant General Collins encouraged his son to be an active child. He would play catch, or soccer with his son on weeknights and as Joseph got older the pair would spend the weekends in the countryside camping and hiking. General Collins also encouraged Joe to attend martial arts classes to teach him some discipline and the art of self-defence. Naturally Joe missed the presence of his mother but she took leave as often as she could and the family spent summer holidays together when possible.

When Joe was 10 his parents had a second child during a five-year assignment the then Captain Collins had as an Aide to Admiral Jameson. They named the child Henry, Hank for short. Joe looked out for his younger brother, keeping the bullies at bay.

During his teenage years, Joe turned into something of a wild child. He partied hard at the weekends, sometimes to the detriment of his schoolwork. As this streak developed, his father started pushing him towards a career in the Marine Corps. However, the death of one of his closest friends at the age of fifteen from a motorcycle crash because the friend was drunk after a house party. Since then Joe hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol. He refocused on his studies and decided to become a Starfleet Security Officer instead of a Marine. His decision had the full support of his father. Joseph Collins enlisted in Starfleet in the summer of 2365 and began his training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois.

2365: Starfleet Academy

Crewman Recruit Collins began his Starfleet training in September 2365. The first few weeks were tough psychologically for the young enlistee but he was physically fit when he began his training so he didn’t find the physical aspect of his training too difficult. Being away from home and not seeing his father on a daily basis was tougher on Joe than he had anticipated and he went home as often as he could in the first few weeks. After speaking with his father and an instructor at Great Lakes who had served during the Cardassian Wars.

Following this Joe found it easier to fit in and his scores showed improvement. After three months in Basic Training, learning the ins and outs of working in Starfleet and qualifying in fitness training, weapons training and etiquette and protocol Crewman Recruit Collins became a Starfleet Officer and was assigned to his first posting where he would learn the ins and outs of being a Security Officer, the U.S.S. Melbourne.

2365-2367: U.S.S. Melbourne NCC-62043 (Excelsior-class)

Crewman Recruit Collins’ first assignment on the Melbourne was as a Brig Guard. While serving in this position he took classes onboard to teach him the procedural aspect of ships Security. His scores during this time were above average and he continued on with martial arts classes in his spare time. The Melbourne saw very little action during this time, instead she was assigned ferrying duties of various VIP dignitaries. On occasion Joe was assigned to VIP Guard duty and was more than up to the task. Thankfully nothing ever happened to one of his protectees.

In 2366 he was promoted to Crewman Apprentice and assigned to Gamma Team, one of the Security Teams on the Melbourne. Collins continued to improve his phaser accuracy scores on both hand phasers and phaser rifles. Again the Melbourne was not assigned to combat or exploratory missions due to her age but instead ferried supplies and personnel from point A to point B.

It wasn’t until early 2367 that the Melbourne saw action in the Battle of Wolf 359. Unfortunately this would prove to be the aging Excelsior-class starships final battle. The Melbourne was one of a fleet of Federation starships tasked with stopping a Borg Cube from penetrating any further into Federation Space. During the battle he repelled one Borg drone but they modulated quickly to the rotating phaser frequencies. One moment Joe found himself in hand to hand combat with a much stronger opponent and the next he found himself in an escape pod with a few others floating amongst the wreckage of the Federation fleet.

2367-2369: U.S.S. Excalibur NCC-26517 (Ambassador-class)

Following the battle of Wolf 359 Collins was promoted to Crewman and reassigned to the U.S.S Excalibur, an Ambassador-class starship assigned to exploration of a series of systems that had been charted years earlier but had yet to be fully explored. The following year the Excalibur returned to drydock and underwent a major refit. Joseph took this chance to develop his skills as a Starfleet Officer and he began taking training to qualifying him to stand watch at the tactical station on the Bridge when the need arose. Crewman Collins was the relief tactical officer during the Excalibur’s involvement in the Tachyon Detection Grid set up by Captain Picard of the Enterprise in order to flush out Romulan involvement in the Klingon Civil War. Joe remained on the Excalibur through until 2369 when he was reassigned to the Farragut as a Security & Tactical Officer due to the lengthy nature of the Excalibur’s refit.

2369-2371: U.S.S. Farragut NCC-60597 (Nebula-class)

With the transfer to the Farragut came another promotion, to Petty Officer 3rd Class. The Farragut was assigned to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone when Joe arrived there. Over the next year the Farragut had several run-ins with the Romulans and Joe got his first look not only at a Romulan Warbird during one of his shifts at Tactical but his first look at a Romulan. Near the end of the year, Petty Officer Collins was assigned to guard one Romulan guest. He found the man trying to access the ships database through his replicator terminal and restrained him while the Captain and leader of the Romulan contingent was informed.

In 2371 the Farragut was involved in the recovery operation of the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Petty Officer Collins beamed down to the wrecked saucer section several times to help with the recovery of personnel and equipment from the Enterprise. Several months later Petty Officer Collins was promoted to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class and reassigned to the U.S.S. Valley Forge.

2371-2374: U.S.S. Valley Forge NCC-43305 (Excelsior-class)

Petty Officer Collins spent the next three years aboard the Excelsior-class Valley Forge. During those three years the ship was involved in a number of combat operations during both the Federation-Klingon War and the Dominion War. Joe found his skills as a Security Officer being put to the test and was never so grateful for his martial arts training than when the Valley Forge was boarded Klingon and Dominion soldiers.

The Petty Officer picked up a number of scars and phaser burns during his years on the Valley Forge, all of which he still has the scars to show for it. The Valley Forge took part in many of the major combat operations in 2374 including the operation to retake Deep Space Nine and the First Battle of Chin’toka. It was during the second battle that the Valley Forge met her end, destroyed by Cardassian Orbital Weapons Platforms. Once again Joe managed to escape with his life and was picked up by the U.S.S. Galaxy following the battle.

By this stage the Petty Officer had served on two ships that met their end in major battles. He’d lost a lot of friends in both, not to mention over the course of the wars with the Klingons and the Dominion. He swore that when the war was over that he would retire to Earth and begin a more peaceful life as a civilian.

2374-2377: U.S.S. Galaxy NCC-70637 (Galaxy-class)

Because of the losses the Galaxy suffered during the battle of Chin’toka, Joe was asked to remain on the Galaxy. The Galaxy saw even more combat during the final stages of the Dominion War than the Valley Forge had, something that Joseph didn’t think was possible.

Because of the shortage of ground troops, Petty Officer Collins was assigned to a Marine Detachment on two occasions and took part in several ground combat operations. This was an eye opening experience for the Petty Officer. His father had often told him of his experiences during the Cardassian Wars and Joe always thought that he had a pretty good idea of what his father went through during those times. It wasn’t until he was involved in ground assault himself that he had a true appreciation of his father’s experience.

When the war ended, Joe decided that he’d had enough of Starfleet. However, Starfleet had other ideas for the Petty Officer. Joe remained aboard the Galaxy for the next two years while she worked as part of the Task Force sent to Cardassia to aid in the rebuilding efforts. Petty Officer Collins found this assignment particularly difficult because of what the Cardassians had done. He was glad to be reassigned to the Hornet in March 2377.

2377-2382: U.S.S. Hornet NCC-74269 (Defiant-class)

At the same time as his transfer to the Hornet, Joseph Collins was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and his assignment to the Hornet was as Master-At-Arms & Gunner’s Mate. As an Escort, or Warship, the Hornet was primarily assigned to defence and convoy escort missions and while there were one or two skirmishes with enemy vessels these missions were uneventful for the most part and Joe found himself enjoying these peacetime missions having spent the better part of a decade fighting wars. He was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2380. The five years on the Hornet were the most enjoyable of the Chief Petty Officer’s seventeen-year career.

In 2382 the Hornet was engaged in a particularly fierce battle with an unknown enemy vessel. When the Chief and Deputy Chief of Security were killed, Joe stepped into the role of Chief of Security and manned the tactical station for the remainder of the battle. The Hornet managed to escape, barely, and the Captain issued a battlefield commission of Lieutenant to Senior Chief Collins. He remained in the position until Starfleet was able to find a replacement. Fully expecting to return to his senior NCO rate, Joe was surprised when Starfleet informed him that his commissioned rank was being made permanent and that he was being assigned to the U.S.S. Intrepid as her Chief of Security.

2382-2385: U.S.S. Intrepid NCC-74600 (Intrepid-class)

The Intrepid’s mission was one of scientific exploration and diplomatic contact. Lieutenant Collins found the role challenging, even on a mission like that. Joe had always been serious about his job, his responsibility for the safety of his fellow officers, but now that he was responsible for the security and safety of an entire ship he took his job even more seriously. That, however, didn’t stop the Lieutenant from being a sarcastic wise ass to the officers around him from time to time. The Lieutenant still saw himself as an enlisted man. His tour of duty on the Intrepid was relatively event free. Joe was surprised to find himself being reassigned once again. This time it was to the U.S.S. Poseidon as her Chie of Security.

Medical Profile

Medical Report

While Lieutenant Collins has his fair share of scars obtained during the Klingon and Dominion Wars of the 2370s, these do not pose any problems to him today and I do not foresee them giving him any trouble in the future. The Lieutenant is cleared for duty.

Psychological Report

I have met with Lieutenant Collins several times now and he seems to be relatively well adjusted. He is well liked by most of his fellow officers and is particularly popular with the enlisted personnel, having come from the enlisted ranks himself. His mouth has gotten himself into trouble on several occasions because of his lack of control over it not to mention his temper. Joseph Collins seems to carry around the ghosts of friends and fellow officers he has seen killed over the years, their deaths continue to haunt him and he is reluctant to discuss them with anyone, even me. However, this doesn’t seem to impact his duties and I hereby declare him fit for duty.
