U.S.S. POSEIDON: MEDICAL DEPARTMENT

Sovereign class - NCC 89515

Medical Department

Beyond the familiar layout of main Sickbay and the Chief Medical Officer's office, the Medical department also features essential facilities such as an intensive care unit (seen at the back of main Sickbay), a physiotherapy room (upper left) and an isolation ward (behind the CMO office).

Next to the CMO office are located the offices for the Head Nurse and Assistant Chief Medical Officer. Further back are several work stations used by the Medical staff on duty.

If supplies are generally at hand around Sickbay, a storage room (access restricted to authorized Medical personnel) equipped with a replicator holds more at the ready. The room also serves to test and resupply a number of emergency medkits available throughout the ship. The less needed items are sometimes stored in a cargo bay.

In times of need, the Medical department may need to convert cargo bays into a triage centre and treatment units.

Medical Ward

Morgue

On the same deck can be found a nursery, a dedicated surgery suite, a biohazard unit, a stasis unit and a morgue. The medical complex also comprises a few more private wards and modular examination / treatment rooms (obstetrics, dentistry...) where the main of the medical staff would be busy out of sight.

Surgery biobed

Surgical support frame (SSF): "Clamshell" frame that fits over a standard biobed; the SSF integrates sterile field generators, medical fluid and gas ports, high-intensity lighting and magnification units, surgical tractors, and anesthesia systems into one modular unit.

A typical SSF has a Mark IV sterile field generator, capable of maintaining a level-5 field; dedicated ports for oxygen, suction, and normal saline, with three variable-use ports (two fluid, one gas); flat-panel, full-field lighting systems with up to 25X magnification capability; five sizes of built-in surgical tractors, with docking points for up to 4 additional units; automated bi-spectral monitoring and delivery systems for both volatile (inhaled) and injection anesthetic agents; and connection points for up to 10 additional surgical tools or systems.

Sickbay

Unless otherwise indicated, patients will be admitted directly into main Sickbay. Above the examination table at the centre is a sensor cluster holding sophisticated biosensors whose readings are directed to the wall display. In case of need, the cluster can also project a force field for restraining patients or maintaining a sterile environment.

Counsellor Office

The Medical department is complemented by the Chief's Counsellor Office.

Medical Lab

Sickbay also has access to dedicated labs directly connected to the Sickbay proper. These small labs, typically attached to the Intensive Care Unit, can conduct tests directly related to the current medical situation. They are equipped with full bioisolation fields allowing them to be cut off from the rest of the ship in case of bio-emergency.

The Poseidon has four larger medical labs spread throughout the ship where specialists and researchers contribute to expanding on the Federation's medical knowledge.

Medical equipment

Medical Wand

A medical sensor and analysis device, the medical tricorder is a combination of a standard tricorder with an added medical peripheral device (MP), a small hand-held scanner. The MP utilizes a total of 96 high-resolution sensors, giving analysis of a wide range of biological functions, as well as some imaging studies; when coupled with data from shipboard computers, the medical tricorder can also provide a partial list of differential diagnoses. Most medical tricorders are outfitted with a standard MP; specialized MPs exist for certain tasks, such as neurological MPs for neurological examination, cytological MPs for infectious diseases, etc. These can be easily exchanged between units. The medical tricorder allows mobile interaction between a medical officer and the shipboard computing systems (i.e. the Starfleet Medical database), and provides a storage facility for medical data.

Medkit

The contents of a medkit may be modulated according to the mission. A full standard medkit would include:

1 - Anabolic Protoplaser
1 - Bandage assortment
1 - Cardiostimulator
2 - Hyposprays
1 - Medical Tricorder (embedded in the upper part as shown)
1 - Neural Stimulator
1 - Respirator
1 - Sampling kit and the following medications:
5 - Vials of Delactovine
5 - Vials of Tricordrazine
3 - Vials of Analgine
4 - Vials of Hyronalyn
3 - Vials of Panamyacin
