Valkyrie Fighter

The Valkyrie-class fighter has long been a hotly contested addition to Starfleet’s deployable defensive assets. When the project was first suggested there was great resistance from the Federation Council as well as members of Starfleet as well. It was felt that the ‘fighter’ by even its namesake was too aggressive an overture. The project was later shelved in favor of other design and function considerations. With the advent of threats such as the Borg and the Dominion, the Valkyrie-class was re-evaluated and the project brought out of mothballs.

The system called for a craft that could operate at high impulse speeds in and outside of an atmosphere. It would need to be small and easily transportable on larger platforms yet have enough warp capability for long-range strike applications. Maintenance was also a factor as the system needed to be easily serviceable without the need for specialized equipment or parts. The modular design of the Valkyrie met the criteria perfectly as several of the craft’s components were hot swappable with parts appearing in such craft as the Danube-class Runabout and many standard shuttle.

After intensive field testing the Valkyrie was deemed ready for service with two hundred units ordered for production. The versatile design has proven itself in combat against the Dominion and is now being deployed on the Sovereign-class Carrier USS Poseidon.

Micro Torpedo Launcher

The Micro-Torpedo Launch System was first incorporated into the Danube-class Runabout and was a natural addition to the Valkyrie's weapons package. The system is built around an extendable launcher tube that deploys from under each wing. Fed by a pre-loaded magazine, the torpedoes can be armed with a variety warheads ranging from chemical explosives and gases, to micro-probes and traditional photon. The system is fire-and-forget with the torpedo relying on the locked sensor image for guidance. A miniature fusion thruster provides the torpedo with excellent range and maneuverability.

Each magazine holds five torpedoes providing the Valkyrie with a very effective stand-off weapon delivery system.
